A thousand-year history, a location at the crossroads of important commercial and communication routes, an extensive port and mercantile traditions - all this makes Gdańsk a meeting place of many cultures, nationalities and denominations. Gdansk is one of the most beautiful cities in Poland, and also of Northern Europe. The old town does not lie beside a beach; instead it has a specific historical harbour atmosphere that you can feel. City situated in the mouth of the Vistula River. On it's arm called Martwa Wisla (Dead Vistula) flowing into the Gulf of Gdansk. The city spreads from the są towards the uplands of the Kashubian Lakeland. The third biggest port in Poland after Szczecin and Gdynia and a ferry terminal to Stockholm. This gentle and cheerful maritime town used to be the richest city within the present Polish borders. In the world it is known as the city of the Solidarity movement and the birthplace of Lech Walesa. Now it is ideal for gentle strolls, amber shopping and short one-day excursions.
